Boarding the bus
Plan your trip ahead of time. Please be at your bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is due to arrive.
As the bus approaches, step out from the bus shelter or bus stop to the curb side. If it is not the bus you need, take a step back.
Never run for a bus. You may slip and fall or be hit by another vehicle.
Have your fare, transfer or pass ready before you board. Show your transfer or pass to the driver for validation. If you are paying by cash, make sure you have exact fare and deposit your fare into the farebox. Ask for a transfer at the time of payment.
If you are standing, please move to the back of the bus to make room for others. Customers must remain behind the white/yellow line near the front of the bus to avoid blocking the driver’s view.
Exiting the bus
Be aware of where you are and when your stop is coming up.
When you want to get off the bus, pull the bell cord above the window or press the stop button on one of the hand rails before the bus reaches your stop. Make sure you give the driver advanced notice, so the driver has plenty of time to stop the bus smoothly and safely. Please remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop.
Do not forget your belongings! Gather all your belongings when you have signaled for a stop.
If your bus stop has other customers waiting to board the bus, please exit through the rear door of the bus whenever possible. Some doors will open automatically and others will open either by pushing or with a sensor. Read any labels on the door to make a proper exit.
Never cross the road in front or directly behind the bus. Motorists passing the stopped bus may not be able to see you. Move to the sidewalk after exiting the bus, wait for the bus to clear before crossing, or use the cross-walk nearby for your safety.
In cases where a bus stop or Care-a-Van stopping area is temporarily inaccessible or where a temporary barrier exists, people with disabilities will be able to board or exit the bus at the closest available safe location. In determining where a safe location is located, the operator will consider the preference of the person with a disability; however the final determination of the safe location is determined by the operator, given their responsibility for the safe delivery of transit service. In these instances operators will promptly report the inaccessible stop to their on duty route supervisor.
Upon request, operators will provide assistance (to the best of their ability) with boarding and exiting the bus, to people with disabilities. Transit operators should not be lifting individuals, strollers or large items. Persons needing such assistance should be travelling with a support person. Support persons may travel at no cost if they are assisting an individual with a disability and the individual has a disability support person’s identification card, which is available from Sarnia Transit. Operators should always provide sufficient time for those who are unsteady on their feet to get safely to a seat and while getting off the bus. Upon request, transit operators will assist with safe and careful storage of mobility aids used by persons with disabilities. People using oxygen are welcome on Sarnia Transit buses.
Storage of assistive devices/mobility aids/strollers
Where room is available and safe storage is possible, transit operators will ensure assistive devices/mobility aids are safely stored and secured within the bus. Walkers, canes, strollers etc. should never obstruct the free flow or safety of other passengers in the aisle or entrance/exit areas of buses. All newer buses have at least two seats that fold up. This area can be used by passengers travelling with strollers. The bus operator will fold and unfold these seats as required. However, should this seating area be marked as a Courtesy Seat and a passenger with a disability boards the bus, they will be given priority for this space.
