June 21, 2024 — The City is preparing to implement measures addressing the impacts of an encampment at Rainbow Park, with a focus on protecting health and safety.

On Friday, June 14, Sarnia City Council authorized staff to implement temporary measures in Rainbow Park, including, but not limited to, fencing, sanitation, lighting, and security measures. Efforts will focus on protecting public health and safety alongside public access to the playground area.

Working in partnership with the Sarnia Police Service, the following measures are anticipated to be implemented as early as Monday of next week:

  • Installation of temporary fencing to the north and south of the playground from Christina Street to the CN Rail fence line, separating the playground area to maintain its use as a recreational amenity
  • Deployment of two security guard teams to patrol the perimeter of the park and playground area, in addition to monitoring incoming traffic, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Installation of temporary lighting at all four corners of the park and at the playground, to enhance site safety
  • Twice a day deployment of washrooms at the southeast corner of the park from 8 to 10 a.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. to address sanitation concerns

A dumpster located at the north end of the site will be moved to the southeast corner of the park to better address concerns with waste at the park.

Sarnia By-Law Enforcement and the Sarnia Police Service will continue regular patrols of the site to address immediate property and safety concerns.
